Winner of the 2013 Electrolux Design Lab Competition Announced
Here at European Springs we are incredibly passionate about innovative, creative and modern inventions, so we were extremely excited when we found out about the 2013 Electrolux Design Lab Competition.
As UK based spring suppliers, we provide product designers with the essential products and components, such as compression springs and torsion springs, needed to bring revolutionary designs to life; which is why we have such an avid interest in this fantastic and ever-evolving industry.
The 2013 Electrolux Design Lab Competition provides a platform for student designers all over the world to get their creations noticed. The competition has successfully run for 11 consecutive years, and this year it received over 1,700 entries from over 60 countries.
Colombian born Adrian Perez Zapata was awarded 1st place for his flying mini-robot cleaner creation, entitled ‘Mab’, at the competition finals at the Fotografiska Museum in Stockholm, Sweden. The winning creation is an automated cleaning system consisting of hundreds of flying mini-robots that are able to clean a house. The robots clean home surfaces by touching them with a small drop of water. ‘Mab’ won the People’s Choice award after receiving over 40% of the public vote that took place on the Electrolux Design Lab website. This outstanding technology detects areas in the home that need cleaning, and then the tiny robots are dispatched to solve the problem. View the fantastic ‘Mab’ in action here:

The 2013 competition’s brief was ‘Inspired Urban Living’; where the competitors were asked to submit concepts for products, accessories, services and even consumables. Previous briefs for this design competition include ‘The 2nd Space Age’, ‘Designs of the Future’, ‘Intelligent Mobility’ and many other inventive titles. The competition itself is broken down into five different stages, including submitting an idea (plus a sketch), concept development, visual development, functionality development and, of course, the final presentation. For designers to succeed they have to excel in all areas of the design process.
This is a fantastic competition for budding design students out there who are looking to establish a career in design and get their inventions noticed. If a British designer was to win this competition it could work wonders for the country’s design industry. Here at European Springs, we can create custom springs for you and your unique designs. Maybe next year, with a little help from one of our bespoke products, you’ll see your name as the winner of the Electrolux Design Lab Competition.
